Down hit San Francisco on their U.S. headlining tour, bringing their southern metal to the Regency Ballroom for a night of sweaty good fun. In sharp contrast to the acrimony that may have existed in his prior band life, it was clear from the get-go that Anselmo and the rest of the Down crew dig jamming together … Phil good-naturedly messing with Kirk during his solos and the rest of the guys just rocking out together and having a good time. And unlike many bands that crank through their 80 minute set so they can get the hell out of dodge, Down was clearly in no rush. Anselmo pumped up the crowd between songs, riffed about why he doesn’t wear hats, batted around a beach ball and gladly collected the odd joint that found it’s way onto stage, at one point remarking, “I still smoke the fuck out of that shit.”

The crowd responded in-kind and showed their enthusiasm with a pit full of sweaty shirtless dudes (and a few ladies holding their own) that generated a swampy funk that raised the humidity in the venue and I’m sure made the NOLA natives right at home but had the Regency reeking of sweaty socks after about 30 minutes. With aggressive music like this, I only saw one fight and Anselmo quickly stopped mid-song and bade the jackass farewell as he was escorted from the venue by security.

The all-around good vibe was probably in good part influenced by the setlist which stuck with the tried-and-true, busting-out the majority of Down’s classic debut, NOLA. After wrapping up Hail The Leaf, Anselmo teased the crowd with the encore everyone knew was inevitable. The show could not have ended better with a brilliantly powerful version of Stone the Crow followed by an extended jam of Bury Me In Smoke that devolved into a wall of noise generated by members of the crew and supporting acts. I can’t imagine anyone walking away disappointed from the show unless they were dying for more from Down III.
