Supporting ArnoCorps at Slim’s, string metal band Judgement Day was the biggest surprise of the night for me. Any metal band with a cello is bound to draw comparisons to Apocalytpica but with these guys the semblance ends there.
I entered the room to find the packed crowd, which had been appropriately rowdy for the Orcs‘ set, rapt with attention as Judgement Day wove through originals that sounded bigger than what you could ever imagine coming out of a three piece (drums, violin and cello). Key to their sound was Anton Patzner’s ferocious effects-laden violin on lead while Lewis Patzner (cello) and Jon Bush (drums) bolted down the rhythm. I highly recommend checking these guys out if you get a chance.
