Flogging Molly | March 19, 2011

I can’t think of a better way for Flogging Molly to end their seventh annual Green 17 2011 Tour than with a sold out show at Oakland’s Fox Theater. Based in L.A. but with a strong Irish pedigree, the Celtic punks took the stage, appropriately saluting the crowd with a can in Guinness.

“Did everyone enjoy their Saint Patrick’s Day? We’ve been celebrating for two months!” – Dave King

Sometimes bands at the end of a tour just looked tired. Not so Flogging Molly which was clearly pumped for the show and feeding off of the party atmosphere. Not long into the set, apparently noting the chaos ensuing on the floor in front of him, Dave King paused between songs for a quick pogo dancing lesson which he described as much more efficient. While I’m sure that the crowd appreciated the thought, they did not appear to heed his suggestion and somewhere into the fifth or sixth song, all I could see of the floor from mid-way back in the theater was bodies and beer flying.

This was one of those nights where the band could do no wrong in the eyes of the audience … which cheered them on as they busted through an epic set including their latest single, Don’t Shut ‘Em Down (available as a free download here), from their yet-to-be-released album. With maybe half of the crowd claiming to be Irish (really?) and then roaring for Ireland’s defeat of England that day in rugby (come on now, how many of you actually follow rugby???), let’s just say that everyone was in the spirit of the occasion.

Hopefully we’ll see Flogging Molly back at the Fox when their new album, Speed Of Darkness, drops in May. And hopefully the Fox will have Guinness on draught (<-see what I did there?) by then!
