My Chemical Romance | March 31, 2011

My Chemical Romance kicked off their World Contamination Tour with a sold out show at Oakland’s Fox Theater.

I have seen the band before, just not quite from this particular perspective … that is, standing between the stage and a few thousand rabid girls. And while a crowded floor and a nasty pit is nothing new to me, the crush against the rail as well as the steady stream of semi-limp bodies being hoisted over the barrier even before My Chemical Romance took the stage, was something to behold. I am sure that a killer set by the Neon Trees didn’t ease the situation, but why the kids didn’t just turn around and head towards the back of the floor and safety is beyond me. But apparently even the force of a 100 lb. person can be a potent threat when multiplied by a thousand or so as I learned first hand when MCR took the stage and the floor beneath my feet started bouncing up and down perfectly in sync with the music.

And so began a stripped-down performance that focused heavily on MCR’s new release, Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys … no glam, no glitter, no props, no uniforms that looked like they had been plundered from Speed Racer’s locker room … just spastic lighting, loud music and what looked to be a new dye job on top of singer Gerard Way’s head (and neck?).

If you’re catching one of the other shows on this tour, do not fret. You’ll get your hits, you’ll get Gerard in perfect rock star repose, finger pointed to the rafters while brother Mikey emits a band’s worth of ‘tude as he thumps away. You’ll also get what you came for, whatever that may be. Because whatever it is, they were sure to have delivered it last night.

Do you have any photos of the audience? One that has a poster that says ‘thank you MCR’
