Sleep celebrated the deluxe reissue of their legendary Dopesmoker LP with only four U.S. dates which culminated Tuesday night with a home town show at Oakland’s Fox Theater supported by Oxbow and Kowloon Walled City.
San Francisco’s Oxbow proved to be the perfect supporting act, performing an intense set of sludgy strip-metal which left frontman Eugene Robinson wearing nothing but his skivvies, a leather vest and what appeared to be a piece of duct tape over his left ear by the end of their set. True to Bay Area form, the smoke from the on-stage incense mixed with local herb for a potent combination that had Eugene ready to blame the first three rows if he failed his next drug test.
Dubbed stoner metal icons, the trio that is Sleep lived up to their billing and then some … lights low and awash in reds and blues as they took the stage without uttering a word and Matt Pike casually launched into Dopesmoker on guitar with Al Cisneros and Jason Roeder eventually joining in. And while each song blended seamlessly with the next, the crowd that packed the floor knew what was up and soaked it all in.
