Hot off the January 21 release of Mind Over Matter, Young the Giant has hit the road on their “Mind Over Matter” Tour which began Tuesday in Ventura and made its second stop at Oakland’s Fox Theater for a near-capacity crowd.
Following up on their debut which spawned two gold singles (My Body, Cough Syrup), there’s no looking back for Young The Giant. Taking the stage stage a few minutes ahead of their 9:50 scheduled set time, they jumped right into the new material with Slow Dive and Anagram before kicking things into high gear with their first singe, It’s About Time, maybe their first true rocker.
Only after exposing the new songs did the band pause while Sameer gave a nod to their early days performing in the Bay Area as The Jakes at local clubs such as Blake’s on Telegraph (RIP) and Bottom of the Hill before announcing that they’d play some “old” stuff. After a few songs off of their debut, it was right back to Mind Over Matter. Clearly not a band to rest on their past successes, Young The Giant wound up performing a whopping 12 of 13 songs from their latest release (only leaving out In My Home).
Mid-way through the hour and 45 minute-ish set, Young The Giant pulled out the song that the fans seem to have been waiting for. If the show was an episode of Name That Tune, the audience would have been the hands-down winner. Maybe it was a deliberate tease or maybe someone jumped the gun (hard to imagine given how tight and polished the set came across), but when that first note of Cough Syrup hit, the Fox erupted and the momentum held all the way through the obvious encore closer of My Body.
If you’re planning to catch one of the future shows, be sure to pick up the new record in advance or else you’ll be feeling a bit left out. There are still plenty of chances to catch them on this run but several shows are already sold out so don’t delay. Head here for remaining tour dates.
