Reel Big Fish

Nearing the tail end of their USA 2016 Winter Tour, Reel Big Fish landed last night at the historic Fillmore in San Francisco. In spite of it being a week night, the house quickly filled for openers The Maxies who are best known for being the least politically correct band to never come out of Greenland. With their off-base humor, The Maxies sufficiently riled the crowd to action (and a lot of middle fingers) and Suburban Legends kept the party going, receiving a shockingly enthusiastic response from the crowd, especially considering their odd selection of Disney covers as well as the Golden Girls sitcom theme song, Thank You For Being a Friend.

With their off-base humor, The Maxies sufficiently riled the crowd to action (and a lot of middle fingers) and Suburban Legends kept the party going, receiving a shockingly enthusiastic response from the crowd, especially considering their odd selection of Disney covers as well as the them song from the Golden Girls sitcom.

By the time Reel Big Fish took the stage at 10 minutes to 10, the general admission floor was packed with people and the room reeked of spilt beer, weed and sweaty skank stank. Even though it’s been a few years since their last release (Candy Coated Fury, 2012), the fans’ passion for these guys has in no way been diminished. Taking the stage to Europe’s The Final Countdown, RBF quickly demonstrated why the kids keep coming back. Even after 6 weeks on tour, these guys showed no signs of road wear … energetic as all get-out and musically tight as can be.

For their part, the crowd went nuts, singing and dancing along as waves of crowd surfers slid their way over the barricade. For one hour and fifteen minutes, there was nary an ebb in the energy on either side of that barricade; indeed the energy only seemed to peak with their always-infectious cover of a-ha’s Take On Me which closed the night.
